Abstract
The development of small-scale oil palm cultivation in the village of Wawobende is confronted with a range of economic and institutional challenges. To enhance the social capital of farmers, it is essential to strengthen the concept of trust, collaboration, social networks, and the involvement of farmers in the pursuit of success and sustainability of oil palm cultivation. The objective of this study is to analyse the forms of social capital employed by farmers in the context of kelapa sawit cultivation in Wawobende village, Sabulakoa district, Konawe selatan district. The present study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The selection of informants was conducted purposively, resulting in a sample of ten active farmers of oil palm who were engaged in cultivation activities and were members of the local social community in the village of Wawobende. The data collection process employed in this study involved several stages, namely observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and a review of the relevant literature. The principal variable in the study is the social capital of farmers engaged in the cultivation of oil palm. The analysis of the data in this study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative analysis, which comprises several stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings of the study indicate that the forms of social capital employed in the agricultural practice of oil palm cultivation in Wawobende Village consist of both tangible and intangible forms of social capital. The tangible manifestation of social capital is evident in the spirit of cooperation and active participation observed in agricultural communities, while the intangible aspect is characterised by the presence of trust and social interaction among farmers. The aforementioned forms of social capital are of pivotal importance in enhancing the efficacy of collective action, facilitating the dissemination of information, fostering solidarity, and promoting the sustainability of oil palm agriculture. Strengthening the institutional capacity of farmers’ groups and improving social relationships among farmers are vital for supporting the productivity and sustainable success of oil palm farming.
